FAQ

Do you charge for an initial visit?

No, we do not charge for the initial consultation. As a courtesy to you and your family dentist, we will discuss the potential need for braces or tooth straightening without any fees. This allows us to evaluate your situation and provide the information you need to make an informed decision.

At what age should I start seeing an orthodontist?

We recommend evaluating young patients when their 6-year molars have erupted and their front permanent teeth begin to emerge, typically between the ages of 6 and 8. The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) suggests that children should have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7 to ensure timely intervention if needed.

Why do you evaluate patients at such a young age?

Early evaluation isn’t necessarily to start treatment right away, but rather to observe and inform. By identifying potential needs early, we can plan for any future treatment. In some cases, children may need early intervention to address developing issues, and early correction can lead to better results. We assess habits, discuss any medical concerns, and create an observation schedule until the child is ready for treatment.

How long will the first visit take?

The first visit typically lasts between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the patient’s needs and concerns. During this time, we may perform a visual exam or recommend additional diagnostics, such as X-rays and impressions, to better understand the patient’s current dental health.

Do you accept patients transferring from out of town?

Yes, we welcome patients who are transferring from another location. We treat these patients just like new ones, gathering comprehensive diagnostic records to understand their current treatment progress and develop a plan to complete their care.

Do you treat adult patients?

Absolutely. A growing number of our patients are adults—currently, 1 in 4 orthodontic patients are over the age of 18, according to the American Association of Orthodontics. Advances in cosmetic orthodontic appliances make adult treatment more comfortable and effective than ever.

What’s the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed an additional 2 to 3 years of specialized training in orthodontics. They focus exclusively on the alignment of teeth and jaw, and their expertise lies in straightening teeth and improving overall dental function, making them specialists in the field.

Can I schedule all my appointments in the afternoon or evening?

While we do our best to accommodate your schedule, certain procedures may need to be performed during regular business hours, typically between 9 AM and 3 PM. These appointments may include longer procedures that are necessary for your treatment. We will work with you to find the most convenient times.

I need to be pre-medicated for the dentist. Do I need to take the same medication for the orthodontist?

Yes, if your dentist has advised pre-medication for dental procedures, please follow the same recommendation for your orthodontic visit.

Do I need to wear retainers after braces?

Yes, retainers are necessary to maintain the results of your treatment. You will wear them full-time for about six months after your braces are removed, followed by nighttime wear indefinitely to ensure that your teeth stay in their new positions.

Why do teeth shift after wearing braces or aligners?

Teeth naturally shift over time, whether or not you’ve worn braces. This is part of the aging process. To maintain your beautiful smile and prevent any shifting, we recommend wearing your retainer as directed, even after treatment is completed.
